Bio
“Buddy Holly might have sounded something like this if he had migrated to the Village scene in the latter 1960s, as folk music was transforming into folk-rock - in other words into an intelligent, inner-directed, generally acoustic pop” This is how one critic described Richard Thorne and his music when reviewing his CD, "Amalgam" released in 2004.
Although he was born in Central Upstate New York, Richard Thorne has been a long time resident of New York City. He has been at one time both an actor and dancer, but from early on, playing music has played the dominant role in his life. When he was 6, he began with the obligatory piano lessons. At age 10 he started eagerly playing the drums, and then later at age 18, he picked up the guitar to write and perform his own songs.
His influences and tastes are very broad, which is apparent in his song writing. He tends to borrow from many different genres, so that at times hints of anything from bluegrass and traditional country, to pop (in the older definition of that term) and even Tin Pan Alley can be heard in his compositions. After pursuing a career throughout the Seventies in theater and dance, which  included a brief scholarship at the New York School of Ballet, he  returned to  playing the drums for  several "New Wave" bands. In 1980, he  stepped out front to make his debut as a guitar strumming singer songwriter, accompanied by a saxophonist and a  bongo player,  at a folk club in Greenwich Village. He soon added an electric violin and bass to the mix,  named the group Richard Thorne and The Side Effects and preceded to write and play his quirky alternative pop/folk rock songs that crossed different genres and styles, and often confused many a listener along the way.  He continued to tinker with his sound constantly changing the personnel and instrumentation, performing  throughout the 80's and early 90's. .
In 1993, except for one impromptu performance at a hotel bar in Jalapa, Mexico, he took a very long sabbatical from both performing and writing. But as the new century approached, he once again picked up his guitar to write and record, and started to lean toward a more americana, country folk sound while still keeping the quirky pop sound and non traditional chord structure in his songs. Incorporating the upright bass, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and the pedal steel into his sound, he recorded three CDs, “Undercover Overachiever “ (2000), “Amalgam” ( 2004) and his most recently released, “One Plus Six” ( 2007) .
He is a long time member of ASCAP, a multi recipient of their Popular Music Awards and is also a member of the Folk Alliance. He continues to record and to perform in NYC as well as to tour throughout many regions of the United States.
