PAUL MARKLEW - BIOGRAPHY

With a varied career as a lead vocalist Paul has travelled around the globe with various bands using music as a vehicle to travel to different continents and cultures while performing live to audiences he would have never dreamed of in a normal situation like Inuits (Eskimo's) at the North Pole, arabian moguls in the Middle East and also to British and Spanish Royalty around Europe.
" The people in Greenland were wonderful and we became close friends, still are. I had a girlfriend called Nia in Sisimiutt which is the 2nd largest city in Greenland, about 2 miles in diameter...honestly. It only took 15 - 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other. I took Nia to the local (pink wooden) grocery shop on the side of a mountain and I bought an ice-cream and handed it over to her asking for a Krona (Danish currency in Greenland) in return. She passed 1 Krona over to me with a very confused look on her face and asked me why she had to pay for it and I said that I wanted to prove that I could actually sell ice-cream to Eskimo's ! Needless to say that she didn't get the joke ! "

As well as having a huge amount of experience of live stage and studio work, Paul also performed on comedy jingles and voice overs for Carlton TV`s Spoof comedy series "Radio TipTop” which gained UK national prime time showing at christmas in the 1995 and 1996. "Radio TipTop” was a "BBC" Radio One comedy show and was a retro take on 1960s broadcasting and it was presented by The Ginger Prince and Kid Tempo. The program encouraged the listeners interaction and offered free membership to Club "Tip Top", which also sold numerous items of merchandise. While working with the TipTop recording team Paul was spotted by a Director of “Carr & Co Productions”, a theatre production team which was run by Royal Ballet members in Norfolk. And after auditions Paul gained the lead Male position in the Musical “Millennium” which ran for the summer season in Norfolk, Suffolk and Devon theaters. As the musical “Millennium” and Carr and Co Productions itself was gaining momentum Paul received standing ovations from the audiences on a nightly basis even though he danced with two left feet ! Paul also played the "Bad-die" in a separate fun pantomime show around many theaters around the UK.
"It was an amazing job, I actually got paid to frighten kids for a living ! "

Being a keen songwriter from around 12 years old, in 1997 Paul fronted, co-produced and wrote all the music for “Submarine” which was a four piece Indie melodic rock guitar combo from Lincoln-shire (UK). “Submarine” were immediately discovered by Peter Whitehead of the UK National Band register in Oxford. Peter was the man who single hand-idly discovered Radiohead/ Steriophonics/ Supergrass and later Muse and Coldplay among many others. He took “Submarine” under his wing and touted around their recorded material around to major UK record company colleagues and invited all his colleagues to the bands live shows. All representatives involved viewed the band as a major influence in the UK Indie music scene. Submarine who at the time were then seen as “Underground” were the for-runners for such modern mainstream bands as Coldplay/Snow Patrol/Travis and many others who have been very popular in the Mainstream UK market for the last four years. This was in the late 90’s when the dreaded Boy/Girl band wave was still in its infancy and they were signing up Westlife, Cleopatra and Allsaints etc........

Submarine were eventually discarded by the UK music industry because they were seen as too old. The oldest in the band was 32.

In the last four years Paul has again plowed his own furrow by recording on his terms doing his own thing as a prolific Singer/Songwriter.

In 2008 he released his first solo CD independently called SONGS OF FRAGRANCE containing 15 original recordings on his own publishing label Marklew Publishing, writing arranging and producing his own recordings in his own studio and not made any compromises as per usual. With the musical basis still around smooth Rock - Jazz, Latin, Bollywood, R&B and even Classical music. Paul is on a musical exploration.
"I have no one to argue with now about band politics and its a big arty world out there....why limit yourself to one paintbrush? I try and go the opposite way to what I know so that I can discover something new"

Nearly a year after its release SONGS OF FRAGRANCE has been gaining lots of momentum on hundreds local stations all over the US on full networks like Triplea (AAA) adult network (170 stations) and Northamericanbroadcasting.com (60 stations) as well as many others. So much so that it is now being picked up by major radio stations on the National Media Network including WXPN World Cafe (Philadelphia).

To build on the radio interest Paul has recorded another solo CD called SONGS FROM THE BRIDGE containing 13 original songs again including Smooth rock-jazz and dabbling in classical. Both CD's have been added to The MUSIC IS OUR VOICE player to view.

Roll on year 2 !!
