Unified Past - Observations

Melodic Revolution Records

Actually a duo from Syracuse, Victor Tassone provides drums to support Stephen Speelman on almost everything else (some help on keys from Vinny Krivacsy on some tracks).  Their first release on this new label after a nine-year hiatus is quite Rush-like, primarily ‘80’s, with some other similar references (Yes, Asia, Magellan, Agenes).  Innovative arrangements bolster the track concepts, and attention-grabbing and lively songwriting, together with appreciably good musicianship, piques the interest, although some may struggle with Speelman’s occasionally wayward vocal sound and style (a bit Tommy Eriksson/Trent Gardner/Michel van Wassem) as well as some incessantly raucous sections.  Strong guitar and bass to the fore, ample keyboard support, excellent strummed 12-string sound, nice slide, give this a classic if slightly scattergun and kitchen sink feel.  It’ll infuriate some and ingratiate others, this one!
