Banding together

I believe this is a very important topic. As a previous venue owner and the founder of two festivals I have heard so many horrible stories, like venue owners not paying performers. Charging performers for basics like water (this one just blows me a way - charging for water, what the hell is that all about) Showing up at a gig after traveling hours or even days only to find out there is no gig. So lets help one another out.

1. Name one or many places that you have performed at either as a band or solo.
2. Venue Name and contact info; person in charge email phone etc;
3. Rate the venue 1 being worst 10 being best
4. Describe your experience
6. What do they offer to performers - pay, meals, lodging etc.
7. Type of venue and type of music this place allows

This will help other performers know what venues to play at and which ones to stay away from.
Please let me know if you all have any questions.
peace love and revolution

Ya'll will get a kick outta this story. The worst place I ever played was in College Park, MD. A scene right out of the movie Road House, lol, playing on a caged stage. Fortunately everybody loved the music and didn't throw bottles or food. I made a whole $25 for that gig, lol.

We have a venue in Sydney Australia call the basement and in the middle of the stage is a structural concrete support beam, But that's not the bad bit. The stage is raise so high that you keep hitting the ceiling of the venue with your head, and to make things even worse, Its is the place to play if you want any labels and the like to check you out as this is where they hangout. They will not travel to see you anywhere else. Its really just one big just and I believe they actually enjoy watching the bands try there best to impress the suites, yet the suits are there Just for a laugh.

Great idea. It can also be a good laugh exchanging our respective horror stories...

This is a very important issue because it is true that some venues are really awful and treat performers poorly. Sometimes they figure the performers should be so indebted to them for the booking, that they think they can treat the performers any way they like. It's distressing-- On the other hand, there are venues that do support the performers-- more on the negative/positve places later on. This is a good idea, Nick, and I am glad that you have started this group. Best wishes, Maggie
